How to Restart Your Writing Practice

Finding a way back into creative writing work

This has been a long silence.

I can’t really remember how long it has been since I opened up a new tab with a blank Medium page. Struggling through finishing my first novel, I got waylaid — writing felt way too hard, here or anywhere. Not to mention a thousand other things that meant my life got complicated, as it tends to do. My creativity seemed to reduce to a trickle.

The process of finding my way back to the flow has been slow. While there have been moments of frustration, the last six months have shown me the value of having ways back in — ideas to keep in your back pocket. If you’re struggling to reconnect with a creative practice, here are some questions to ask.

What does this practice mean to you?

In other words: What do you actually care about?

Life is hard and things are always changing around us. When we stop doing something we used to enjoy, this is a chance to ask ourselves:

  1. Did I stop because things got in the way? Or…
  2. Did I stop because this no longer matters to me?
